From the Lose Friends series, here is what Jonar Nader has written about: 360-DEGREE FEEDBACK
The ‘360-degree feedback’ fad is useless. Most people would not so much as write a letter of complaint to their council about an annoying dog in their neighbourhood, let alone document their views about their colleagues. There is an old saying along the lines of, ‘Never abuse people while you climb the corporate ladder because you might need their support on your way down.’ In this case, 360-degree feedback sparks a new maxim along the lines of, ‘Never say anything about incompetent colleagues because one day you might find yourself reporting to them.’ If organisations were serious about the 360-degree mechanism, the company policy would allow absolutely any employee, customer, or supplier to submit feedback about any staff member or manager, anytime.
As for PERFORMANCE REVIEWS, they are manipulative, stressful, counter-productive, and ineffective. Modern review documents are drafted by lawyers, written by psychologists, and edited by personnel managers. By the time they reach employees, they are convoluted, irrelevant, and downright impossible to implement.
