Crooks used to make outrageous offers to trick people into signing contracts. Eventually, authorities insisted that all the conditions of a sale had to be divulged. These were relegated to the back of contracts in fine-print so small that very few people could read them, let alone understand them. Thereafter, authorities insisted that the asterisk be used to further highlight the potentially tricky areas. Regardless of what the law says, and irrespective of what you have to do to cover yourself, you need to look at each offer you make, and contemplate what it would be like if you were unable to use fine-print. What would happen if you were forbidden to use the asterisk? Customers do not take kindly to ‘terms and conditions’, especially when they are not in the spirit of the headline offer that caught their attention in the first place.
