Believe it or not, according to Jonar Nader, a New Zealand man (living in Melbourne, Australia) was arrested and found guilty of misrepresenting himself to limousine drivers. The 32-year-old man listened to the appropriate radio frequency used by limousine companies to find out the pick-up details at the airport.

He would walk out of the arrivals lounge, approach the chauffeur, give him a nod, and take the ride. Defence counsel argued that the man never actually lied, nor did he impersonate anyone. He just said hello to the chauffeur holding up the sign with a passenger’s name on it.

The judge found the man guilty of being a nuisance, having taken more than forty such rides over a period of two years. In all instances, the fare was billed to the original client, or absorbed by the driver.

His sentence was reduced to a one-year good behaviour bond. The judge lay some of the blame on the limousine companies, suggesting that in future, they should ask for identification from passengers.

The limousine industry reports dozens of these cases each year, many of which are honest mistakes by passengers who accept a limousine ride because they see their name on a board held up by a chauffeur.

Believe it… or not.
