Believe it or not, according to Jonar Nader, we will soon be carrying a PBB, That’s a Personal Black Box, like those used on aircrafts to capture important information. Airlines record vital data so if anything untoward happens, engineers would be able to unravel the circumstances that led to a disaster or malfunction.

Now a South Australian company has produced a PBB which comes in a range of shapes, sizes, and colours. The most popular unit is wristwatch size and can store over 6 hours of digital voice or video recordings. Other models can be inserted in all sorts of accessories from sunglasses to running shoes.

The device is waterproof, and will withstand major shock, even a bus running over it.

“As more people are living alone and travel the streets by themselves, they do not have much of an opportunity to tell anyone about certain events of the day which may latter prove significant” said inventor Julie Hays. For example “If you are walking down the street and you feel a sharp pin prick on the back of your neck, you can record that incident in your PBB so that if you are later found unconscious, doctors would be able to access that information in your PBB, and thus examine your neck to ascertain if the sharp pain you reported is related to your current condition. Maybe you were stabbed by someone with a needle, or you were stung by a poisonous spider” she added.

Units vary in price from $200 to $3000 for the deluxe model which contains a GPS as well as an automatic paging device that calls your medical centre for assistance. It monitors heart rate and other vital functions, and uses mobile phone technology to automatically send an alarm to your doctor in a medical emergency. Apart from medical applications, the PBB can be used by bush walkers, and may be modified for children who can summon assistance with the press of a button, or activate a tracking device when they are lost.
