Believe it or not, according to Jonar Nader, there is a push to discourage all forms of drink driving, even minimal alcohol consumption.

Police officers at breathalyser units will now measure the level of alcohol in the blood stream in dollar units. Any level over .001 (even if it is within the legal limits) would attract a fee. The fee is not a fine per se but a compulsory donation to charity.

If a driver exceeds the legal limit, then the usual fines apply.

Motorists groups are opposed to the idea. They fear that the novelty-factor might lead drivers to think that it’s acceptable to drink and drive because they are helping charities.

On the other hand, charity groups are rapped with the idea because it could result in an annual windfall of 36 million dollars given current drinking habits.

The campaign was the brainchild of a former police officer who is now a lay preacher. He said that it is his intention to curb the consumption of alcohol.

He said that people think it’s okay to drink as long as they are below the legal limit (which is different in each state).

The preacher does not feel that any amount of alcohol consumption should be encouraged. “Being under the limit does not mean that one is safe,” he explains, “alcohol consumption contributes to relationship breakdowns, and family suffering which burdens many charitable organisations. This way, consumers of alcohol can make a financial contribution to these charities” he added.
